The Career Decision Making Cycle

Step 1 - Assessment

Begins with assessment: what skills, values, education, experience, dreams and needs an individual has. Assessment provides a variety of avenues: problems to solve, jobs to do, occupations to embrace.

Step 2 - Research

The second step is to research these avenues, opportunities, jobs and occupations. This step involves gathering accurate information.

Step 3 - Decision Making

The third step involves eliminating some of the options and making decisions about pursuing others.

Step 4 - Action

The fourth step requires action to move towards the desired solution, opportunity, job or occupation.

Career preferences and competencies, along with an individual’s life situation, change with time and experience which allows us to make thriving career changes.

My book provides information about the career myths that exist today, how career decisions are made, what options there are and what adults can do to help youth make the best career decisions possible.

– Elizabeth Arnold

Career coaching with Sarah-Jane, at a time in my life where I felt very lost and confused about what my next step in my career would be, was comforting and reassuring. She helped me to see that feeling ‘lost’ was only one way to look at that season in my life. I soon realized that I wasn’t lost, but that I was just in the process of change and that is okay. At the beginning of our coaching session I had shed some tears and was feeling incredibly uneasy about my future. When all was said and done, I was enlightened, inspired and excited to explore what was next for me. Thank you Sarah-Jane.”
